Martin Brodeur is looking forward to watching his three boys play hockey at Shattuck St.Mary's prep school in Minnesota, but maybe not next season.

Brodeur, the New Jersey Devils' future Hall of Famer and owner of just about every major goaltending mark in NHL history, told Mark Everson of the New York Post that signing on for another season in 2012-13 is now a distinct possibility. Brodeur, 39, is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and there was a school of thought that Brodeur would hang 'em up.

“I feel differently about it now than I did last summer, or at the start of the season,” Brodeur told Everson. “It’s not 100 percent, but I’m definitely leaning toward coming back next year.”

Why the change?

“I’m having fun,” Brodeur said.

Reality may set in should there be a work stoppage thanks to collective bargaining, but should things fall into place, fans may well have the chance to see Brodeur play again.

“There’s a bigger chance now than before,” Brodeur said “A few people I’ve spoken to have told me that if you think you still have that little flame, keep it going, because once it’s out, it’s out.”

And the Devils will be his team. Brodeur told Everson that free agency will not be his ticket out of Prudential Center.

“First and foremost,” he said of a return to New Jersey. Should there be no interest in his return, then Brodeur would look elsewhere. But with no heir apparent on the horizon, it seems unlikely the Devils would part with their greatest player.
