The New Jersey Devils posted their fifth straight win after defeating their cross-town rival New York Rangers, 1-0.

The game began wish fists flying, as Cam Janssen and Eric Boulton squared off with Mike Rupp and Brandon Prust. Needless to say, there is no friendship between these two teams.

David Clarkson would beat Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist at 8:14 of the first period after Zach Parise found Clarkson streaking down between the circles. The goal was Clarksons 21st of the season and the lone tally of the game.

"It makes it easy for me to put that in when Zach makes a play like that," Clarkson told Dave Lozo of the NHL. "I was coming in, I yelled, but I didn't think he'd be able to get it to me. It was an unbelievable pass."

Martin Brodeur and Lundqvist put on a true goaltending clinic during tonights game, as each made big save after big save in order to keep their respective teams in the game.

"He's unbelievable," Brodeur said of Lundqvist. "The saves he made, where he won't get a shot for 20 minutes and he gets a breakaway and it seems like it's nothing. He played a hell of a game. It took a perfect shot to beat him."

"You always get the sense when Marty and Lundqvist play each other, you can see that they want to out-do each other," Parise said. "Ninety-nine times out of 100, it's a great goaltending battle and it was again tonight. Marty was great. He made huge saves and really got us that win."

The game ended with a bang just like it began. With the seconds ticking down in the final minute, Artem Anisimov threw a puck in on Brodeur which was rebounded out into the middle of the ice. Rangers forward Marion Gaborik was closing in on the puck at the time but made contact with Brodeur, pushing him back into the net. The puck would be smashed in on a rebound, sending the Garden faithful into pandemonium. The goal was quickly called back though, as the referee deemed that Gaborik had interfered with Brodeur, resulting in a penalty.

"I thought it was the right call," said Devils coach Peter DeBoer. "Marty gets pushed into the net. It's the right call. I give them credit for getting it right."

DeBoer was happy with what he has seen from his team lately.

“I think we answered some questions this week,” DeBoer said to Tom Gulitti of The Record. “One week doesn’t make a season, but we showed we can play with anybody.”

This was Brodeur's first shutout of the season and 117th of his career.

The Devils now have 65 points for the season and sit fifth in the Eastern Conference.
