Veteran defenseman Bryce Salvador, highly respected by both players, coaches and management, has been named the team captain for the New Jersey Devils.

Ilya Kovalchuk and Patrik Elias are the alternate captains. Coach Pete DeBoer made the announcement at training camp Thursday. Salvador replaces Zach Parise who signed with Minnesota as a free agent.

Salvador is the 10th captain in the history of the franchise, dating back to Don Lever for the inaugural season in New Jersey.

Thursday saw scores of NHL players placed on waivers. In New Jersey center Tim Sestito was placed on waivers. If he clears by noon Friday, he can be sent to the AHL's Albany Devils. Tom Gulitti reported in the Bergen record that the Devils also placed Matt Anderson, Jeff Frazee, Jay Leach, Chad Wiseman and Steve Zalewski, who have been playing at Albany on waivers. It was a technical move and no one is expected those players to be claimed.
